Cafè Zouk has been named
after a famous Mughal poet (1789). Zouk was a contemporary of
the last Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar, who was dethroned by
the British and exiled by them. The Mughal dynasty ruled the
Indian sub continent between 1526 and 1858 until it's demise at
the hands of the British.
The Mughal rule in India
was one of the most dynamic and colourful periods in the
history of the sub-continent. The Mughals contributed to all
aspects of art production including calligraphy, painting,
manuscript making, textiles, and garden design. They also had
great influence on literature, poetry and architecture. The
finest sepulcher ever, a monument of eternal love, the Taj
Mahal was built by the Mughal king Shah Jehan in the memory of
his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Most importantly they brought
with them an excellent variety of cuisine. The Mughlai food,
developed under the patronage of the Mughal kings and queens
made full use of various distinctive and varied spices found
in the sub-continent. Their influences were so profound that
they helped shape present day India.
At Café Zouk we have taken
the theme of the great Mughals’ passion for food and attempted
to recreate this chapter from history of the sub- continent.
Our dishes have been specially selected as their influences
